Have you ever tried a big year? Most of us have to a degree – maybe on the local patch or our county … or even the whole country. But what about doing a big year that takes you right around the world? That takes things to a whole new level!

In 2016, 29-year-old Dutch birder, Arjan Dwarshuis, took on a worldwide big year and managed to see 6,852 species in 41 countries, raising £45,000 for BirdLife International in the process.

His challenge of trying to see an average of 17 new species per day, every day, for a year is the subject of his new book, The (Big) Year That Flew By.

Birdwatch and BirdGuides readers are invited to join Arjan in conversation with world birder and Birdwatch contributor, Keith Betton, for an evening of stories and discussion about his record-breaking world year list on Wednesday 24 May at 7.30 pm. You can register for this FREE event by clicking here.

A review of Arjan's book will be featured in the June 2023 issue of Birdwatch magazine.
