I thought that I would share these couple of shots out of interest to see if this is common or not? This unfortunate moth had what appears to be a trombidium mite (parasitic) attached near its eye - Tony the Suffolk County Moth Recorder tells me "How much overall harm they do in terms of stopping the moth getting around to mate and lay eggs, etc is debatable" but obviously for the poor moth it's looks very unpleasant to say the least. I have seen similar mites on butterflies as well in the past and wondered what they were at the time.
