In Japanese this bird is called "Keri" which means "Lapwing", and (in the west of Honshu at least) is far more common than Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) which is called "Ta-geri" or "Rice paddy Lapwing", which is only a winter visitor. This bird is uncommon in the Kanto (Tokyo) area of eastern Japan, only breeding in a handful of places. In western Japan (Kansai) it is far more common and in summer was pretty much a "trash bird" on a par with Brown-eared Bulbul when I lived in Hyogo Prefecture in the 1980s.
