Woodcock have been feeding in the garden, which is surrounded by Campfield Marsh RSPB Reserve, now since 3rd December 2010 They are attracted to the leaf-litter under the trees along its margins and in the damson orchard. Up to ten individuals have been probing with their long sensitive bills under the snow and in to the litter, for invertebrates(mostly worms) which the find at an alarming rate ... continuing to feed most of the day, being observed before sunrise and still being there at dusk. They appear in pairs or in small groups and range across the garden, moving systematically from location to location. It has been a real delight to observe these essentially noctural creatures at close hand for so many days now.
