Two dark Green Woodpeckers on this site at the moment. One theory being that they are nesting in a burned out sooty tree and just generally covered in soot and scruffy. More pictures of this bird at http://www.ispotnature.org/node/420872 Didn't get decent pictures of it in flight but this shows that the colouration is more normal on parts that would be covered by the closed wings - perhaps adding credence to the sooty theory.
