Although this bird seems to have left West Hythe I thought this might be of interest as it addresses Steve Evans comment of 12th January. Clearly there is a lesion of the second toe of the right foot. The deflexion deformity suggests to me a fracture dislocation at the terminal IP joint. If so even if the swelling goes down the deflexion will remain and could be useful for ID if and when a night heron turns up somewhere.
