Appropriately, in the light of this week's news from County Durham, the winner of the June 2002 Photo of the Month competition features Bee-eaters. Although we received several decent shots of the Bishop Middleham birds, we decided that Bill Aspin's shot of three of the four birds that graced Haverthwaite in the Lake District towards the end of last month deserved to win the prize. It's hard to go wrong with this photogenic species, but we particularly liked the way Bill captured the birds in similar poses and all looking the same way, which added the magic element of humour to an already technically excellent image. Bill chose our DVD-ROM Guide to All the Birds of Europe as his prize, and told us: "The image is a videograb taken with a Leica APO 20xw/Sony PC-110 Camcorder combination. I would heartily recommend to those birders not already embracing the advent of digiscoping to take the plunge! The added enjoyment that digiscoping gives to my birding is immense, and, as I have just found out to my delight...you could win a prize one day!" Other photos receiving multiple nominations included Mark Jobling's Long-eared Owl from Elmley in Kent, Andy Brett's superb Quail shot (taken at Plex Moss in Lancashire) and Roy Harvey's image of the popular Red-footed Falcon at Gringley Carr in Nottinghamshire.
