Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) Habitat -Seacoast, lakes and rivers, Length 60cm and a wingspan 144cm. These photo above is the Herring gull (Larus argentatus) were taken at Lyme Regis a coastal town in West Dorset, 25 miles west of Dorchester and 25miles east of Exeter. It is nicknamed “The Pearl of Dorset” the town is noted for the fossils found in the cliffs and beaches, which are part of the Heritage Coast known commercially as the Jurassic Coast. . They feed on Omnivorous - An opportunist feeder being both predator and scavenger, especially at rubbish tips rallying around fishing boats or refuse dumps they are raucous and competitive, threatening and stealing from other birds. The herring gull breeds mainly in north and west Europe and widely distributed around the coastline, with cliffs, islets and offshore islands. A small proportion of the population nests inland, mainly on lake islands and moorland. During breeding special dietary challenges for Herring Gulls and in courtship the males feed their mates. In the process of egg laying the female losing fat reserve, protein and bone calcium are decrease and to replenish stores, they seek marine invertebrates and fish. The chicks are fed by both parents day and night for up to 12weeks.
