A fight broke out between 6 pairs. It got to a point where it was difficult to keep track asto who was fighting who - personally, I wonder if they felt the same? I also witnessed some behaviour I've never seen before in coots. On a potential nesting island, one started a foot slapping display where he bends his back and slapped his foot on the mud calling as he did. Another one did this but not for as long. I wonder if he was saying "I'm claiming this spot!" Slapping his foot in a temper? perhaps shouting "mine, mine, mine"
