American Coot with a Common Coot behind. This photo shows the American Coot's poorly marked black ring near the bill tip and the reddish/brown top to the shield. It also shows how the American Coot lacks the black feathering that nips in between the top of the bill and the base of the white shield. These two birds spent a great deal of time together this morning, with the Common ignoring the only other Common Coot I could see on the loch I don't know if any one else has seen the birds spending time together?
