This 'grey egret' caused a bit of a stir - there were probably more views offered on its identity than there are ducks on the loch! It is possible that the apparent greyness of its plumage and most bare parts is caused by some form of contamination - perhaps a spell on an oil rig? It's a rare vagrant to Shetland - for example, there are fewer total records of Little Egret than there are of Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler on the islands!
