A couple of weeks ago I spotted various Tits apparently feeding on a damaged section of tree bark. One person thought they might be cleaning or sharpening their biils but today I found a Woodpecker doing the same. These two photos show it appearing to gather the little white particles on the surface to eat. It is not pecking or drumming but carefully picking the bits off. Could it be a fungus that grows on the damaged bark? I'll try to get a closer look next time I go.
