The May 2002 Photo of the Month winner is Andy Brett, a Leicestershire birder and prolific contributor of photographs to the BirdGuides photo sevice, for his superb close-up of the popular Common Rosefinch at Weybourne in Norfolk. We've had several good pictures of this obliging male, but we judged Andy's to be the best, being nicely posed, well focused and illustrating the character of the species - notably its crimson plumage, beady eye and big chunky bill - very clearly. Andy uses a Sony DCR-PC6 camcorder through a Kowa TS824 scope, and other examples of his work appear on the website www.birdingpix.co.uk. Andy chose a free subscription to our services Bird News Extra and Email Alert as his prize. Other highly commended contributions from May included Marcus Lawson's historic record shots of the mainland Pallid Harrier at Dungeness in Kent, Bill Baston's and Margaret Breaks' elegant Dotterels (at sites in Cambridgeshire and Lancashire respectively), Tristan Bantock's excellent Grey Partridge study and Phillip Tomkinson's flight shots of Black and Whiskered Terns from Marton Mere and Pennington Flash in NW England.
