The April 2002 Photo of the Month winner is likely to be a popular one, though it doesn't show a rarity and the star of the picture isn't even a bird! Vernon Lundy's comical shot of a lurking Fox perfectly framed by the necks of the Canada Geese it's eyeing up will have brought a smile to all but the most hard-bitten birder. We've even had votes emailed in for this picture from subscribers (a first!), which has prompted the idea of turning the judging of the Photo of the Month competition over to the subscribers of Bird News Extra. We're considering the idea and how we might implement it, so watch this space for now. In the meantime, congratulations to Vernon and commiserations to the runners-up: Andy Bright for his pin-sharp and delightfully composed Stonechat on Gorse; Tim Brown - second time as a runner-up - for a record shot of a hard-to-capture rarity, Subalpine Warbler (at Winterton in Norfolk); John Molloy's head study of an Iceland Gull; and Phil Bishop's technically accomplished flight shot of the Hull Red-rumped Swallow. As ever the quantity and quality of submissions continue to increase, and with several of the BirdGuides judges tackling the steep digiscoping learning curve we're also gaining a greater appreciation of the abilities of many of our contributors. Guess who's on the dinner list? Red Fox and Canada Geese, taken with Fuji Finepix 4700 through Kowa 823 with 20-60 zoom at 20X.
