We couldn't resist Richard Jeffree's breathtaking close-up of a Bittern, which was taken at the popular winter watchpoint at Fisher's Green in the Lee Valley, and have thus awarded this photo the accolade of Photo of the Month for February 2002. Richard captured this spectacular image with his Nikon Coolpix 995 digital camera through a Kowa TNS3 telescope and reports the bird was "almost too close to digiscope"! Richard chose our DVD-ROM Guide to All the Birds of Europe as his prize. Honourable mentions to Jerry O'Brien (a previous winner) for his Hawfinch shots, Ewart Cowan for his Shropshire Tree Sparrow, Phil Stidwill for his Black Guillemot in the Plym Estuary, and Andy Fray for his Great Grey Shrike pictures.
