Razorbill by Ray Galea

Taking images of birds underwater is a rare opportunity for photographers, yet occasionally the stars align and a combination of clear water, a good angle and a confiding bird means the opportunity manifests itself. Recently, a significant influx of Razorbills to the Mediterranean Sea – where the species is normally very scarce – has led to some unusual sightings for local birders.

This particular individual was recently seen and photographed by Maltese birder, Ray Galea, who enjoyed great views of the bird swimming and diving close inshore. Representing just the third record for Malta in the last 50 years, Ray has 'nailed' the shot with this phenomenal underwater image of the auk diving in crystal-clear blue water. The overall sharpness of the image, a brilliant, head-on pose and the bubbles boiling off the bird's back all combine to make for a deserved Photo of the Week winner. Well done to Ray!
