Join in the celebrations as your favourite birding magazine passes the major milestone of its 300th edition.

Birdwatch is giving away the amazing new Swarovski BTX telescope worth £3,300, and reflecting on some of the major changes that have taken place over the 25-year period since its very first issue back in 1992, including:

  • Winners and losers: Those species faring well in the last quarter century and those in decline or gone, plus the state of our habitats and the big issues conservationists need to address next, by Mark Avery.
  • A brief history of splits and lumps: David Callahan has all you need to know about avian taxonomy, from Sibley and Monroe’s ground-breaking new world order of birds to the splits added to the British list since 1992.
  • Tools of the trade: From the porro-prism binoculars and drawtube scopes of yesteryear to today’s gas-filled optics and digital cameras, Mike Alibone and Steve Young outline the huge recent technological advances in birding equipment.

Plus your where-to-watch guide to the best new reserves and hot-spots of the last 25 years, Andy Stoddart with ID advice on Black, White-winged Black and Whiskered Terns, Mark Cocker on the birding scandal of Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen 50 years after his death, pin feathers explained, columnist Lucy McRobert, product reviews, all the big stories and bird news from BirdGuides.com, and your questions answered by our expert team.

The June issue of Birdwatch is on sale from 25 May 2017.

Congratulations to Birdwatch magazine on your 300th issue! I remember this magazine as it started and can say it is a very credible and real publication for all birders and wildlife lovers! Thanks to Birdwatch for publishing the article on my 1998 trip to Asia! I look forward to the next 300! Cheers James (@MancunianBirder)
