Welcome to the first of our series of birding films. We hope that this will be just the start of a long series of programmes about birding by birders. We have joined forces with David Lindo, the Urban Birder, who will be familiar to many of you from (amongst others) the One Show.

This video is brought to you in "YouTube high quality". If your connection is a little slow, please play then pause, and wait until the red "play-bar" has filled up before pressing play again.

We're keen to hear your opinions. Please do leave a comment, or email contact@birdguides.com if you have a local patch that you would like us to feature, or a good idea for a short programme. We hope eventually to produce some 30-minute programmes that we would love to bring to a wider audience.

We'd like to thank David Lindo, the Urban Birder; Des McKenzie; and Mark Pearson of Morning Bride.

When posting videos, please avoid using flash formats - this format is known to be open to malicious content*, so many people (me included) have Flash disabled to prevent this risk

A shot in the arm on a Winter's night. Great pictures of the Firecrest and Med Gull. Music added to a splendid piece.

Re Flash format: this is the most widely adopted format for embedded video as used by YouTube, BBC, etc. We are serving our own video content, not taking ads of dubious origin - the most common source of Flash malware. As always, the best way to stay safe and still enjoy a rich browsing experience is to make sure your Flash Player and antivirus software are kept up-to-date.

An excellent use of technology - very enjoyable to watch. Quite how anyone can concentrate with that level of background noise is testament to the dedication of "patch birders" everywhere. I look forward to other pieces. Well done to all involved.

Very, very nice, like a "breath of fresh air". I found the music a bit irksome, and a directional mic to pick up Des's voice better would be an improvement. Good to see something "birdy" without the usual "faces".

Brings back memories of being in Ken Gardens and watching Redstart, Pied Fly and Les Whitethroat just before work one great morning about 5 years ago! Look forward to the next local patches to be featured.
