Identification

Larger than Lesser Redpoll and with a ‘frosty’ appearance and clean whitish flanks.

Habitat

Breeds in coniferous and birch woodlands. Winters in birch, willows and alders.

Behaviour

Performs elaborate songflights over the breeding area.

Migration

Birds in northern and eastern regions migrate to a wide area of continental Europe. Wintering birds are often nomadic, exploiting food sources wherever they find them and often remaining to breed if supplies last.
