IdentificationThe Greenfinch is a familiar garden bird since it was one of the first species to master the knack of feeding from red peanut bags. The male can be quite conspicuously green but in females and juveniles this may not be so obvious. Such birds can still be identified though by the pale yellow panels in the closed primaries and in the sides of the tail. HabitatBreeds in gardens, parks, scrub and hedges. Winters on farmland and in gardens. BehaviourPerforms a wonderful dancing display flight in which it flies erratically around its territory with rather stiff wings like one of those wind-up model birds. MigrationA partial migrant over most of its range with some southerly birds remaining resident. Birds generally head south and west to winter within the breeding range for the winter. This information is taken from the BirdFile on the appropriate BirdGuides DVD-ROM. As well as video and sounds, our CD- and DVD-ROMs contain additional text on Voice, Sexing, Ageing, Food, Nests and Eggs and more.
