IdentificationThe Common Treecreeper is like a feathered mouse which discretely climbs in spirals up the trunk of one tree before flying down to start on the next one. Its speckled brown plumage provides excellent camouflage but the silvery-white underparts may give it away. Other features to look for are its long pale eyestripes, slender down-curved bill and black-edged golden wing-bar sometimes glimpsed as it flies. HabitatBreeds and winters in both coniferous and broad-leaved woodlands and parkland. BehaviourBeing so small, Treecreepers are particularly susceptible to heat loss on cold winter's nights but it has been shown that sometimes they may save heat by roosting communally to 'keep each other warm'. MigrationA sedentary bird, particularly in Britain but some birds migrate from breeding areas further north. This information is taken from the BirdFile on the appropriate BirdGuides DVD-ROM.
