Identification

In Great Tits the typical black and white face pattern is embellished by a broad black stripe which runs from the throat down the middle of the bright yellow belly. This characteristic black and yellow pattern is boldest on the males and duller on the females but is still visible even on the juveniles.

Habitat

Breeds and winters in woods, parks, orchards, hedgerows and gardens.

Behaviour

Experiments have shown that if a male Great Tit is removed from its territory, the subsequent occupation of the site by a neighbouring male can be delayed by broadcasting the song of a Great Tit from a loudspeaker. If the tape played gives only one version of the Great Tit's many songs then the site is reoccupied faster than if the tape plays a full repertoire of songs. This suggests that Great Tits with the broadest repertoire will be more successful in defending their territories, which is why they have evolved so many different songs.

Migration

A resident bird over much of its range although in northern Europe with birds nesting in mountain areas move to lower ground in winter.
