Identification

As you might expect, they have white throats but can be told from the slightly larger Whitethroat in all plumages by their plain brown not orangey-brown wings. They have darker heads than Whitethroats, creating a neater contrast with the white throat. In autumn, many birds show a prominent dark mask through the eye, highlighted by a pale supercilium.

Habitat

Breeds in mature hedgerows and bushy thickets.

Migration

All birds are migratory, wintering mainly in north-east Africa, particularly the Sudan and Ethiopia. Hence, even British birds migrate via the eastern Mediterranean.
