IdentificationIf you've never seen an Icterine Warbler you might wonder whether you'd be able to tell one from a Willow Warbler. Don't worry. The plain face, staring eye, long sloping head and big pale bill make it obviously different. To separate it from the closely related Melodious Warbler though, you have to look carefully at its wings: Icterines have a pale panel in the wing and their primaries are unusually long and spaced out, not bunched up, as in a Melodious. Also, the legs are usually a distinct blue-grey as opposed to brown-grey and they are less striking than Melodious Warbler's. HabitatBreeds in dense bushes and woodland edges. MigrationAll birds migrate to sub-equatorial Africa for winter. The return migration in spring follows a more westerly route than in the autumn. This information is taken from the BirdFile on the appropriate BirdGuides DVD-ROM. As well as video and sounds, our CD- and DVD-ROMs contain additional text on Voice, Sexing, Ageing, Food, Nests and Eggs and more.
