IdentificationFieldfares are easily identified. They are almost as big as a Mistle Thrush but their reddish-brown backs are sandwiched between the striking cold grey colours of the head and rump. In flight the conspicuously white underwing coverts could cause confusion with Mistle Thrush, but if you can't see the grey head and rump, look for a clear contrast between the white lower belly and the black tail. HabitatBreeds in woodland, especially birch, and in parks and gardens. Winters on farmland, entering towns in bad weather. BehaviourThey usually nest in colonies of 5-20 pairs. It has been shown that pairs which nest in colonies are more successful since they suffer from less predation. MigrationA largely migratory bird which winters in southern and western Europe although when winters are mild, birds may be only partial migrants. Adults winter further south than juveniles This information is taken from the BirdFile on the appropriate BirdGuides DVD-ROM.
