Identification

Tree Pipits definitely can't be identified according to whether or not they are sitting in a tree. The best way to separate them from the other pipits is by their different songs and calls but a silent bird could be tricky. Notice how the eye-stripe and moustachial stripe are usually obvious, giving the whole head a stripier look than a Meadow Pipit and see how the median coverts are obviously dark with pale edges. The breast and throat is a rich buff contrasting with the white belly and undertail. Lastly and most convincingly, look at how the thick dark streaks on the flanks become much narrower down by the flanks.

Habitat

Breeds in heathy or grassy areas with scattered trees including young conifer plantations.

Behaviour

The more elaborate song of the Tree Pipit is matched by a more stylish song-flight. The male sets off from a tree, rising upwards in full song, then changes the pitch of the song as he spirals back down, usually to another tree or bush.

Migration

The Tree Pipit is a long-distance migrant travelling to winter in sub-Saharan Africa, India and the Persian Gulf. Some also winter in the Greek islands such as Crete.
