IdentificationBlack Guillemots can be identified in all plumages by the huge white splodge which covers most of the upper wing coverts although in young birds this may be broken with grey mottling. In summer they are otherwise truly black except for bright red highlights on the legs, feet and inside the mouth. In winter their underparts become white and the upperparts mottled grey. HabitatBreeds on rocky coasts. Winters at sea. MigrationMostly sedentary although young birds will disperse widely outside the breeding season. This information is taken from the BirdFile on the appropriate BirdGuides DVD-ROM. As well as video and sounds, our CD- and DVD-ROMs contain additional text on Voice, Sexing, Ageing, Food, Nests and Eggs and more. BirdGuides rarity status: Local
