Identification

Avocets are easy to identify. The mostly white plumage, marked with sparse narrow black lines, is very distinctive, as is the upturned bill and blue legs. If the bird is feeding its bill may be hidden, but the way it is swept from side to side through the water is equally diagnostic.

Habitat

Breeds in shallow brackish lagoons and also near estuaries. Winters on muddy estuaries.

Migration

Birds concentrate in large numbers in the Waddensee area to moult between July and September, with most birds moving south-west during September-October to Spain, Portugal and west Africa.

This information is taken from the BirdFile on the appropriate BirdGuides DVD-ROM. As well as video and sounds, our CD- and DVD-ROMs contain additional text on Voice, Sexing, Ageing, Food, Nests and Eggs and more.
