Identification

The massive size of a Golden Eagle may not be obvious from a distance so you have to notice its shape. The Eagle is relatively long-headed and long-tailed and, above all, its wings are exceptionally long and relatively straight-edged with deeply fingered tips. The impression is of long narrow planks held up in a shallow' V'. The Golden nape is about the only noteworthy plumage feature on an adult eagle but the immatures have striking white markings in their wings and tails.

Habitat

Breeds on rocky outcrops in mountainous country and on sea cliffs. Winters on uplands in open country.

Migration

Generally a resident species although some birds migrate from Scandinavia and Finland to eastern Europe in winter.

This information is taken from the BirdFile on the appropriate BirdGuides DVD-ROM. As well as video and sounds, our CD- and DVD-ROMs contain additional text on Voice, Sexing, Ageing, Food, Nests and Eggs and more.
