Identification

Buzzards are sizeable and chunky birds with large, broad, blunt-ended wings, fairly short, broad tails and short, rounded heads. They can show a variety of plumages but they are generally dull brown with darker areas at the wrists and paler panels in the primaries. Notice how the wings are swept upwards and forwards when they soar.

Habitat

Breeds in moorland valleys, woods, farmland and cliffs. Winters in breeding habitat and other areas of open country.

Migration

Adults in the west tend to be either resident or short-distance migrants while to the east birds will migrate over long distances to north-east Africa.

This information is taken from the BirdFile on the appropriate BirdGuides DVD-ROM. As well as video and sounds, our CD- and DVD-ROMs contain additional text on Voice, Sexing, Ageing, Food, Nests and Eggs and more.

There were a pair of Buzzards over Hillam in North Yorkshire, but sadly one was electrocuted a couple of months ago. The local Electric board were going to try and do something with the pole but haven't turned up yet. The other one is still around and can be seen most days.

My wife (who has eagle eyes, and does no housework at all) is sure she saw a Buzzard over Essex on Wednesday in the Ongar/Harlow area. Just wondered if anyone else had spotted it.

Believe I saw buzzard (long, blunt wings, soaring in circles) above Chiswick London c. 13:00 on 11/08/09. Also over Isleworth in Spring 09 (circling, soaring to new spot, circling again). Are buzzards common in W London?

We have a family of 8 at the back of our house in Old Warden. We believe there is a baby amongst them.

I live in kildare (ROI) I have regular sightings above the open farmland at the rear of my house, always usualy around lunchtime but recently seeing them earlier in the day too. The sallins area in kildare has a huge population of Common buzzards, I play golf there and will see them 99% of the time. In groups of 4,5,6. Was there today and seen 3 at 9.30 ish and all through the morning.
