Identification

The easiest way to tell a male Green-winged Teal from a Eurasian Teal is by the fact that the obvious white line on each side of the body is vertical, near the front end of the flanks, rather than horizontal. At close range you can also see that the narrow yellow lines in the face of a Eurasian teal are almost completely lacking in a Green-winged Teal. Until recently, it was thought that females really were identical but it has now been suggested that the pale line across the mid-wing is more consistently buff-coloured on a female Green-winged Teal, rather than mostly white, especially at the distal end, but this difference is likely to be very difficult to see. No wonder then that, as yet, no-one has tried to claim a female Green-winged teal in Europe.

Habitat

Found in much the same habitats as Eurasian Teal: marshes, pools estuaries etc.

Migration

From breeding grounds, moves south to winter, from British Colombia southwards, including West Indies and Central America.
