IdentificationIt most closely resembles the Great Crested Grebe but is slightly smaller and stockier with a thicker, invariably darker neck and showing some yellow rather than pink in the bill. Young birds may still have the head stripes of their juvenile plumage but the dark crown characteristically extends to below eye level. In a Great Crested Grebe the dark eye would stand out against a pale background. In summer plumage they have a neat pale grey face patch contrasting with the dark red colour of the neck and black crown. HabitatBreeds on well-vegetated freshwater bodies. Winters on coasts and estuaries but is infrequent inland. MigrationEuropean breeding birds migrate to North Sea, Baltic and Atlantic coasts, returning to breeding waters from early March. This information is taken from the BirdFile on the appropriate BirdGuides DVD-ROM. As well as video and sounds, our CD- and DVD-ROMs contain additional text on Voice, Sexing, Ageing, Food, Nests and Eggs and more.
