Identification

They are easily identified as being about the size of a Pink-footed Goose but with brown and pinky buff plumage, highlighted by an ugly black face patch as if its been given a black eye. In flight the wings are strikingly black-and-white, very similar in pattern to a Ruddy Shelduck but, if you can’t see the head pattern, notice that the belly is paler than on a Ruddy Shelduck.

Habitat

Breeds in parks and wet open woodlands. Winters on lakes and marshes.

Migration

Feral birds largely sedentary although some may migrate to specific moulting areas.

This information is taken from the BirdFile on the appropriate BirdGuides DVD-ROM. As well as video and sounds, our CD- and DVD-ROMs contain additional text on Voice, Sexing, Ageing, Food, Nests and Eggs and more.

The 'Branta' geese form an extremely attractive group of birds, with most interest in recent years focussed on 'brent geese' and 'canada geese': the former for potential species 'splits' and the latter for the identification of vagrants amongst wild geese flocks in northwest Scotland and Ireland.
