Agadir

John Armitage has asked me to point out that birds such as House Bunting, Common Bulbul, Spotless Starling and Little Swift can all be seen fairly easily in Agadir. Moussier's Redstart is also possible but a bit trickier. There's a colony of Little Swifts in the open-fronted garages next to the Mitsubishi dealer. To the South of Agadir, just past the last hotel (Tikida), there's a promising area of scrub behind the dunes. Here, John Armitage had Barbary Partridge, Stone Curlew, Bee-eater, Tawny Pipit, Woodchat and Great Grey Shrikes, Rufous Bush Chat, Serin, etc.

Driving South from Agadir it is easier to find the road to the Oued Souss by looking for signs to Hotel Pyramid. Beware of parking off the road where the estuary comes into view – John Armitage got stuck in soft sand here. He also felt obliged to pay for a 'minder' to guard his car at the barrier (site 3).

I failed to point out that in order to keep going South from Agadir you have to turn right in Ait Melloul, otherwise you'll finish up on the road to Tarroudant. Allow plenty of time for getting through Ait Melloul. The signpost to Massa from the main road now says only 'Massa'. Again, John Armitage reports that you should expect to pay someone if you wish to leave your car at the reserve entrance.

Chris Whitfield added Stone Curlew to my list of species at site 3. He also added that if you turn up this track then take the left-hand fork shown on my map, it leads to 'a small village with a green patch in the middle where there were at least 10 Bald Ibis which allowed close approach, 10 metres or less. They also roost on the buildings. They have been there for some time.' If the ibis aren't easily seen. it may be worth asking if you can look within the grounds of the 'ghastly' exclusive hotel a bit further on.

Stephen Mawby had a male Mourning Wheatear beside the Ziz Valley road near the km post 'Er Rachidia 58' and a Scrub Warbler in the 'scrubby wadi 35 km from Tinerhir'.

Heading from Merzouga, the last café before the Yasmina is the Café Caravane. In December 1998, this had 50 Desert Sparrows plus good numbers of Bar-tailed Desert Larks nearby and Tristram's and Desert Warblers in the nearby scrub (S Mawby).
