Page 10 The Etang Nuret, between Mezieres and La Gabriere, offers good views from the road of nesting Whiskered Terns (Alan Clamp). Site 1 Since 1997 this lake has again been full of water and excellent for Black-necked Grebes and Black and Whiskered Terns. Site 3 Alan Clamp had Little Bittern and Purple Heron over the small lake to the south of the track (Etang de l'Ardonniere, apparently). Page 12 Site 4 Julian Lawson managed three sightings of Little Bittern here in 1999 but reports that they are very elusive. Alan Clamp has pointed out that the correct name for this lake is the Etang de Ricot. Site 5 In 1998, the Etang de Montmellier was practically dry and good for waders including Black-winged Stilts. 2 Garganey were also present. Alex Lees reports that the areas just north of Cherine lake can also be good for Whiskered Tern, Night Heron and Honey Buzzard. Julian Lawson points out that herons have increased here in recent years. Night Herons are now seen regularly, Cattle Egrets were seen just south of Gabriere in 1998 and Great White Egrets have been reported near Blizon. Page 18 Site 1 Alex Lees did have Black-necked Grebes here as well as 2 White Storks and both species of kites overhead. Site 2 Alex Lees had Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Golden Oriole in the woods Alex stayed near Dieuze and found Marsh Warbler, Red-backed Shrike, Red Kite, Hawfinch, Montagu's Harrier, Hobby, etc. Site 3 John Redshaw visited the dam at Lindre Basse and found 2 'enclosures' around which were 24 free-flying White Storks plus a heronry with about 50 Grey Herons. Other species here included Common and Honey Buzzard, Red and Black Kite and Great Reed Warbler. Page 20 Site 5 John Redshaw added Red Kite, Tawny Pipit, Red-backed Shrike and Grey-headed Woodpecker. John Redshaw also tried the Etang de Porroy, also in the Lorraine National Park, and found more Collared Flycatchers plus birds such as Black Tern and Ortolan Bunting. Other nearby sites he recommends include the Etang de Laxiere (good views of Purple Heron) and the Maron Gorge in the Moselle valley near Nancy (good numbers of Red-backed Shrike and Grey-headed Woodpecker). | |||||||||
