Page 12 Site 3 Birds here in August 1999 included Red-breasted and Collared Flycatcher and Black and Middle Spotted Woodpecker. In June 2003, I had singing Red-breasted and Collared Flycatchers, numerous Hawfinches and also several views of White-backed Woodpecker here in the next valley to the west of Lator, where I stayed at Farm Lator, a guesthouse for birders run by a Dutch birder, Rob de Jong. Page 14 Site 4 Paul Suter successfully found White-backed Woodpecker here in August 1999. Page 17 Site 2 Birds here in August 1999 included Little and Baillon's Crake. There is also an observation tower here, 1 km from the road, to the south. Site 3 In August 1999, there were Pygmy Cormorants on the marshes here. The bar is now closed (shame) but there is a car park opposite. From there you should see Red-footed Falcons and, possibly, Cranes and you can enjoy a Sand Martin colony too. New site There are good areas of the Hortobágy plains to the north of the river Tisza too. The track which runs between Szentistvan and Tiszabobolina includes a wind-break of pine trees with breeding Red-footed Falcons and Long-eared Owls. Check the pylons around here for Saker Falcons. Page 20 Site 3 In November 2005, Roger Smith had 8 Red-breasted Geese here, as well as Pygmy Cormorants. Site 5 Signs around here suggest that access to the observation tower (if it still exists) is not for public use. Site 6 Between here and Egyek, Roger Smith had thousands of Cranes in November 2005. | |||||||||
