Installation Instructions (iTunes version 7)
Thank you for purchasing the iPod edition of The Video Guide to British Birds. To install the software on your iPod you will need to connect it to your PC (Windows or Macintosh) and then use Apple's iTunes software application to make the transfer. Remember that you will need just over 3GB of space free on your iPod to accommodate the video files.
These instructions assume that you have previously downloaded iTunes and installed your iPod. Please do not connect your iPod to the computer at the beginning of this procedure.
- Put the BirdPod DVD into your DVD drive.
- Open iTunes on your desktop and select Movies in the source list.
- PC: Select Start > My Computer and double-click on the drive named BirdPod (your DVD drive; usually drive D:)
Macintosh: open a finder window for your BirdPod DVD.
- You will see 6 folders. Double-click on Video Guide Volume 1.
- Click Edit on the toolbar and select Select All.
- The computer may ask if you want to select hidden files – if so, click OK.
- Drag all of these files into the main Library window on the right-hand side in iTunes. The files may take a while to copy; please be patient.
- Repeat for Video Guide Volumes 2, 3, 4 and 5.
- Now all the videos are installed we need to deal with the playlists. In iTunes on your desktop select File, Import and navigate to the Family Playlists folder on the DVD.
- Click on the first of the families and click OK. This needs to be done for all 46 families – but each import is almost instant. (PCs can also use the key combination Ctrl+Shift+O to bring up the import folder.)
- You should see the playlists appear in the Source list window on the left-hand side of iTunes.
When you have finished this procedure you should sync your iPod to the computer by now connecting the iPod. Once it has finished updating, if it hasn’t already told you that you can disconnect your iPod automatically:
- Highlight your iPod in the Source list.
- From the Controls button at the top of iTunes click on Eject iPod.
- It is now safe to disconnect your iPod from the computer. On your iPod scroll to Videos – Video Playlists, then the required family name, scroll to required bird and play.
To update manually:
- Connect your iPod.
- In iTunes, select the Movies in the Library’s source list: select the small icon to the left-hand side of the iTunes Search window which will show "items in a list". If you cannot see an Album column, click View, View Options, select Album and click OK.
- Click the Album column heading to group the albums, then locate and click on the first file "The DVD Video Guide to British Birds".
- Scroll down to the last of these files and whilst holding the Shift key click on this last file so that all of your selections are now highlighted.
- Drag all of the files onto the iPod icon in the source list. Do not be alarmed if nothing appears to happen for the first 10 minutes or so; thereafter the iTunes information window should start showing you the files being copied over.
- Once completed, drag each of the playlists from the left-hand side Source list and drop it on the iPod icon.
- Repeat this step individually for each playlist.
- When this is finished, highlight your iPod in the Source list.
- From the Controls button at the top of iTunes, select Eject iPod.
- It is now safe to disconnect your iPod from the computer. On your iPod scroll to Videos – Video Playlists, then the required family name, scroll to required bird and play.
Please note that this software only works on video-capable iPods (5th generation or later). Remember to use headphones to hear the commentaries, songs and calls!
