This record shot, a composite of 3 images, proves that they can fly! (Of 315 images of Slavonian Grebe in the BirdGuides database to date, none shows the flight action.) Useful pointers for seawatchers in winter are the auk-like jizz, restricted white 'speculum' in the rear wing (extensive in Black-necked Grebe), the white 'thumbmark' in the forewing (absent in B-nG) and the forward-tilting black 'beret' cap (extensive in B-nG). Red-necked is superficially similar in wing pattern to Slavonian but noticeably larger, rather 'hump-backed' and with a greyer, less-contrasting, neck and head pattern.
