In Great Tits the typical black and white face pattern is embellished by a broad black stripe which runs from the throat down the middle of the bright yellow belly. This characteristic black and yellow pattern is boldest on the males and duller on the females but is still visible even on the juveniles.

Breeds and winters in woods, parks, orchards, hedgerows and gardens.

An abundant and widespread bird, except in the Northern Isles. The species is largely sedentary, but continental migrants do occur in variable numbers, mainly in eastern and southern England.

Widespread and numerous in most of Europe.

1 600 000 territories across Britain, most common in the south. In Ireland there are an estimated 420 000 territories.
37-52 million breeding pairs throughout Europe.
