In summer, the colourful bill, white face and red feet make them easy to separate from the Guillemots and Razorbills. By winter the bill has shed its outer, more colourful layer so it appears smaller and duller and the face too becomes a duller smoky grey. However, the shape of the black outline to the face, is still clearly visible. In flight the lack of white both in the sides of the tail and on the trailing edge of the wing are further useful features, as is the grey underwing. |
Breeds in burrows in turf on islands and cliffs. Winters at sea. |
Nests colonially in burrows on similar cliffs to Guillemots and Razorbills. However, it is not as numerous as either of them, and is seen less commonly from the coast in winter. |
Breeds around the coasts of Britain, Norway, Iceland and Brittany. Some colonies are spectacularly large eg. over 200,000 pairs on St Kilda, Scotland. |
| 898 000 individuals in Britain with most breeding in the north and west. The largest colonies on St Kilda. In Ireland a further 41 000 birds breed. |
| 4 800 000-6 100 000 breeding pairs with the largest populations in Iceland and Norway with 2 000 000 apiece. |
