adult male in tree, Finland, June.
(the text below is an abridged version of the extensive birdfile feature available in full on all our CD-ROM Guides)

The male is easily identified by his green and yellow head markings and warm reddish underparts. The duller female is rather trickier but the pinkish bill and pale eye-ring should catch your attention. The streaked head and yellowish bib will then confirm the identification.

Breeds on bare and scrubby hills and fields, occurring more widely on passage.

A scarce migrant which has seemingly become more uncommon in recent years. A few birds turn up in spring, with the majority between late August-October, on the east and south coasts. The best sites are the Isles of Scilly in October, Portland Bill, the Shetlands and Flamborough Head.

They can be found in many parts of Europe; typical sites include the agricultural fields around Liminka Bay in Finland, the flat farmland around the Biebrza Marshes in Poland, the hillier meadows in the valleys of the French Alps and the scrubby hillsides near Korkuteli (Turkey).

600-750,000 breeding pairs with an extensive range across Europe, most common in Spain and north-eastern Europe.
