Adults scavenging on ground, Spain, May.
(the text below is an abridged version of the extensive birdfile feature available in full on all our CD-ROM Guides)

The Azure-winged Magpie is a most exotic-looking bird, smaller and much more delicate than the Magpie with white cheeks contrasting with a neat black cap and with beautiful powder blue wings and tail. They are often found in small loose flocks, fluttering from tree to tree like overgrown Long-tailed Tits.

Breeds in areas of open woodland, especially of Cork-oak or Umbrella Pine.

Locally common in parts of Iberia, they are easily seen during any drive through wooded parts of Extremadura and can be guaranteed to give excellent views by the car park at Acebuche on the Coto Donana reserve. The woods around Quinto do Lago, Portugal are also good for them.

250-350,000 breeding pairs in Spain and southern Portugal.
