Adjusting Sound Settings
If you are experiencing any problems with the sound quality, please make
the following adjustments to the QuickTime sound settings in Control Panel.
To set the QuickTime Sound Out settings:
- Close the BirdGuides program if you have not done so already.
- Click the Start button on the Windows desktop.
- Select Settings, then Control Panel.
- If there is a link reading 'View all icons' or similar at the
left-hand side of the Control Panel window, click on it.
- Look for the QuickTime icon. There may be several icons that read
'QuickTime' - the one you want looks like this:

and if you single-click on it will show the message 'Configures QuickTime
software and hardware components'. If the icon is not present, this
suggests QuickTime has not been installed at all - please call on 01909 560992 for further assistance.
- Double-click the icon to run the QuickTime configuration program.
- Open the topmost drop-down list and select 'Sound Out'.
- The next box down probably reads 'DirectSound' - this is the setting
you need to change. Click the arrow on the right side of the box and choose
the next setting down (usually Wave out, but skip any settings that
mention modems).
- Close the QuickTime Settings window.
- Close the Control Panel window.
Run the BirdGuides CD-ROM (via Start, Programs, BirdGuides)
and see if the changed setting has improved the sound quality. If the sound
has not improved, run through this process and select the next Sound Out option
down in step 8 (work methodically through them to ensure you don't miss one).
If you get to the end of the options and you have still not found a setting
that gives you improved sound quality, please contact Technical Support.
