Installing The Concise Guide to British Birds on Windows XP

Shortly after production we discovered that the Concise Guide to British Birds would not load straight onto Windows XP, but needs to be loaded using the Windows XP Compatibility Wizard, for which we apologise. The instructions on how to do this are below. As the product came packaged with QuickTime 3, which sometimes does not work well with Windows XP, it is also advisable to download and install the latest version of QuickTime (see also below), unless you already have a current later version on your computer.

Installing The Concise Guide on Windows XP

  1. Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories.
  2. Select Program Compatibility Wizard.
  3. Click Next on the first screen of information.
  4. Place the product CD-ROM in the drive and choose this option when asked on the screen.
  5. Choose Windows 98/ME when asked and click Next. Do not choose Windows XP.
  6. On the screen asking about screen resolution and colours, leave all options unticked and just click Next.
  7. When all questions have been answered (mostly default), the program should start to install as normal.

Downloading QuickTime 6.5.2 Standalone installer

The download is approximately 11Mb in size so will take some time to complete on a slow connection – about 35 minutes with a 56K modem.

  1. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone
  2. Select the Win 98/Me/2000/XP radio button if it is not already selected.
  3. Select your required language if it is not the default (English).
  4. Click the Download Quicktime button.
  5. You see a screen headed Congratulations. If the download does not start automatically, click the Download link.
  6. You see the File Download window. We would recommend you select the Save option, so that you will have a copy on your hard drive, should you need it again in the future: click Save.
  7. In the Save As window, in the Save in drop-down select a suitable folder to save the installer file to; if you don't know anywhere suitable, we recommend My Documents so that you will be able to find it again.
  8. Click Save.
  9. The file will now start downloading to your hard drive, which will take approximately 35 minutes on a standard 56k modem, so now is a good time for a cup of tea.
  10. When the download finishes you should be given an option to Open the program. (If you choose not to run the program at this time, you'll find the Quicktime Full Installer file in My Documents when you wish to install it.)
  11. Click Open.
  12. You see the Welcome to Quicktime 6.5.2 window - click Next.
  13. Quicktime now recommends closing down any open programs - click Next.
  14. In the Software Licence Agreement window, click Agree.
  15. In the Choose Destination Location window, click Next.
  16. In the Choose Installation Type window, accept the Recommended selection and click Next.
  17. In the Select Program Folder window, click Next.
  18. In the Enter Registration window, leave the text boxes empty (unless you have QuickTime Pro) and click Next.
  19. Eventually you will see a window headed QuickTime Settings: Introduction - click Next.
  20. In the Browser Plug-in window, leave the MIME settings, and click Next.
  21. In the File Type Associations window, accept the defaults and click Finish.
  22. A dialog box headed Finished appears. You do not need to read the README file or launch the QuickTime player so deselect both boxes and click Close.
  23. Close the window showing the QuickTime folder, and your Internet browser window.

Now run the Concise Guide program. If you have any problems with any of this, please contact BirdGuides Technical Support at support@birdguides.com.
