Finding Birds in Central Turkey

This isn't the first book or set of notes to be made available for birders visiting Turkey. It is, however, as far as I know, the first to show in detail where to find the birds in such wonderful places as Eregli Marshes, Sultan marshes/Yay Golu, Seyfe Glu and Alacadag; the first to explain how to find the sites at Akseki now that the new road has been built and the first to offer unique hints on how to find birds such as White-breasted Kingfisher, Bruce's Scops Owl, See-see Partridge, Desert Lark, White-backed Woodpecker and Little Crake.

Turkey is a vast country and hence has a grandeur of scenery which is lacking in most of Europe. However, its great size presents logistical problems for visiting birders. Of course it is possible to get from Antalya airport to Lake Van and back via many birding sites in one holiday, even in a fortnight. However, if you want to do more than just tick-and-rush you'll have to 'do' Turkey a bit at a time. This book describes one very big 'bit': from Ankara, South and East as far as Birecik. There are other good areas further West (Istanbul, Manyas, Bafa) and further East (Lake Van, Sivri Kaya and the Borcka Pass) but they each deserve a book of their own. Here though you will find three of the best wetlands in the Western Palearctic (Kulu Golu, Eregli marshes and the Goksu delta), the best mountain area I've ever visited (Alacadag) and sites for many special birds which are rarely seen anywhere else: Caspian Snowcock, Red-tailed Wheatear, Great (Eastern) Rock Nuthatch and Bruce's (Striated) Scops Owl for example.

Hopefully, with the help of this book you will find it easier than ever to get to the right place to see the birds you birds you desire.
