5: Shap to Orton (7¼ miles)

Thursday 19th October 2006

Woke to rain. We set off at 10 along a shortcut across fields to the M6 bridge. The rain eased off as we passed the quarry so I took my coat off - but not for long! Easy walking across flattish moorland with odd bits of limestone pavement here and there. Missed 3 Geographs (the first free squares on the route!) through absent-mindedness. After a short road section we followed a pleasant descending path along a stream to Orton in improving weather. Arrived about 1pm and had a chip butty and a few pints in the George. Beat Andy 4-3 (from 3-1 down!) at darts. Checked into the B&B at about 4 - nice room and welcoming Norwegian landlady. Back to the George for dinner (chicken curry) then a few more pints with John and Chris (who we first met in Patterdale). They're both in newish boots (even newer than mine, which were at least broken in - one of them bought his on the way up!) so are suffering foot problems. Left the pub at midnight after a very easy day, just what we needed after the exertions of the previous two days.

As it was such a short walk, and mostly gloomy, I took hardly any photos.

Weather: Grey rainy morning, improving as we arrived. Walk: 5/10 Mood: 8/10 Cumulative distance: 66 miles
