3: Rosthwaite to Patterdale (14.5 miles)

Tuesday 17th October 2006

Good scrambled egg for breakfast. 9.25 start. Slightly misty and overcast as we walked along Stonethwaite Beck and Greenup Gill, with occasional sunshine. Scramble up Lining Crag gave good views. Saw a Red Deer stag on the slopes of High Raise as we crossed the watershed.

Decided not to do the Helm Crag ridge after all so instead took the longish descent of Far Easedale Gill (where two shepherds and three dogs were gathering the sheep from amazingly high up the crags). Lunch at the Traveller's Rest pub near Grasmere - good half of Jennings and an excellent ham sandwich.

Tongue Gill to Grisdale Hause rather a slog in warmish weather - glad to reach the Tarn. Then a long stony descent on tired feet to Patterdale. Easily the hardest day yet (as to be expected with two watersheds to cross), but still fine weather. In the evening we had a couple of pints (and an OK lasagne) in the White Lion, and watched Man Utd beat FC Copenhagen 3-0.

Weather: Slightly overcast start, improving. Walk: 7/10 Mood: 7/10 Cumulative distance: 43 miles
