In FebruaryMarch 2004 we spent ten days in Sabah (the northern part of Malaysian Borneo). We flew with Royal Brunei Airways from Heathrow to Kota Kinabalu (the capital of Sabah), via a refuelling stop at Abu Dhabi and an internal flight from Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei)and the same in reverse going back, except we refuelled at Dubai (or was it the other way round?). It's around 22 hours each way, anyway, including the stops.
We stayed at the Sandabar Bay Resort, a fairly isolated (and slightly ageing) resort hotel 20 miles or so northwards up the coast from Kota Kinabalu. Our package included one night at the "Kinabalu Mountain Lodge", which inspired us to come back later to climb Mount Kinabalu, a trip which involved two further nights away from the hotel. Another organised trip took us on an internal flight across the country from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and back on a one-day visit to the Sepilok Orang Utan Centre and Kinabatangan River. All in all we reckon we packed in quite a lot for such a short holiday.
Anyway, here are some of our favourite pictures (we tried to be selective, honest).
