All the species in BWPi can be viewed in one of four formats: Thumbnail View, Single View, Quad View or Species View. This screen grab shows the Thumbnail View for Red-necked Grebe:

This shows:
- The species are accessed via a menu on the left side of the screen. There is a choice of menu formats, including different languages, different taxonomic sequences and different species selections. Click on any species for it to appear.
- The assets available for the chosen species are listed below the species menu. Click on any asset for it to appear in the main 'browser' window.
- In thumbnail view, all the assets for the chosen species are shown. These can be 'filtered' so that, for example, only the videos are visible or the line drawings are 'hidden'. If you double-click on any of these assets, it will appear in an expanded form.
- This species, Red-necked Grebe, has 7 illustrations, each presented as a separate entity and clearly labelled so it is obvious which image represents which plumage (putting an end to much confusion caused by the plates in the original books). This is especially useful for species with many races or plumages; there are 25 illustrations for Stonechat and 64 for Yellow Wagtail!
- This species has 7 video clips, showing birds in a variety of plumages. In the BirdGuides DVD-ROM Guide to All the Birds of Europe, the maximum number of video clips per species was only 5.
- This species has 8 line drawings showing different postures or behaviours. Each drawing is clearly labelled to show which posture or display is being illustrated (again making it easier to use these illustrations than it was in the original books).
- This screen also shows further assets such as an egg plate, a detailed distribution map and an annual cycle diagram, all of which can be expanded just by double-clicking on them.
- In this case, the number of assets is so great they won't all fit on one screen. However, by adjusting the slider in the toolbar at the top of the page you can adjust the size of all the images and 'shrink-to-fit' so it looks like this:

Now you can see that there are more assets including audio clips (sound recordings) and access to all the text in either Concise BWP or the original 'Handbook' BWP.
