BWPi: Known Issues

The following issues have been identified with BWPi. None of them was considered serious enough to delay production of the disk, and these limitations should not greatly affect your use of the product.

From time to time we will release updates to BWPi on this website. We strive to improve our products with every update by addressing known problems, improving performance and adding new functionality. If you have registered your copy of BWPi with your email address you will be notified of any updates as they become available.

Maps fail to appear

BWPi users may not be aware that the maps in the product use the Flash format in QuickTime so that these detailed maps display well at various resolutions. Unfortunately, and out of the blue, Apple has completely disabled support for Flash in the latest version of QuickTime (7.3.1) citing critical security concerns. This means that anyone who upgrades to QuickTime 7.3.1 (usually an automatic upgrade) will lose the ability to see the maps in BWPi - they appear black or blank. And, unlike some earlier versions of QuickTime, there is no way to turn back on Flash support.

Pictures and movies do not appear when using QuickTime 7.2

Unfortunately, QuickTime version 7.2 inadvertently introduced path problems causing pictures and videos not to work correctly with BWPi or The DVD-ROM Guide to British Birds version 8. Apple have now fixed this problem with their latest version, QuickTime 7.3.

You can download the latest QuickTime from www.apple.com/quicktime/download - untick the "Sign up" selections as required, and click the Free Download Now button.

Once you have installed QuickTime, if you find your Distribution maps are missing in BWPi, please see above under "Maps fail to appear".

Program may fail to respond if minimized with video clips playing

If BWPi is minimized with video clips playing, it may only partially repaint the screen when it is maximized again, and not respond. You will still be able to close the program down, but it may generate an error message. Please cancel the error message. This can be avoided by stopping videos before minimising.

This issue is fixed in BWPi 2006 and BWPi 2.0.

Annotation size options not functioning

Right-clicking (Mac: Control-clicking) on drawings shows options to increase or decrease annotation size. This feature is not presently available.

This issue is fixed in BWPi 2006 and BWPi 2.0.

Thumbnail/Species/Quad View mode shows single asset only

When BWPi is closed in Single View mode only, on restarting the program selecting Thumbnail mode (or any other view mode) only displays one asset. Clicking on another species will repopulate the Browser view correctly.

Local Help unavailable in Windows 98

Windows 98 users may find that the Help, Local Help menu option shows an error message saying that the Help files don't exist. To correct this:

  1. Open Windows Notepad (select Start, Run; type Notepad and click OK).
  2. Select File, Open and navigate to the folder in which you installed BWPi (usually C:\Program Files\BirdGuides\BWPi).
  3. Select "All Files" in the Files of type drop-down.
  4. Open Crex.ini (if file extensions are not shown, this is the second Crex file, not the one with the bird icon).
  5. Scroll down to the [Help] section, and modify the line LocalHelp=Help/index.htm to read LocalHelp=C:\Program Files\BirdGuides\BWPi\Help\index.htm
  6. Select File, Save, and then File, Exit to close Notepad.
  7. Restart BWPi and the local help will open in a browser window.

BWPi not responding

Some older Windows PCs may exhibit intermittent problems with the program not responding. This is usually a QuickTime settings problem, and can be rectified by optimising the QuickTime settings:

  1. On the Windows taskbar at the bottom right-hand side of the screen, you should see the QuickTime "blue Q" icon:

  2. If this icon appears in the taskbar, right-click on it and select QuickTime Preferences; otherwise select Start > Settings > Control Panel (or Start > Control Panel in Windows XP) and double-click the QuickTime icon.
  3. Click on the down arrow next to the drop-down list near the top of the window (which usually reads "About QuickTime") and select the "Video Settings" option.
  4. In the first instance just deselect "Enable DirectDraw", and close the QuickTime Settings window.

  5. This may be sufficient depending on your PC specification and graphics adaptor card combination, but if you still encounter intermittent problems, then please open the QuickTime preferences again, and in the Video settings also deselect "Enable DCI", then close the QuickTime Settings window:

BWPi 2006 on Windows Vista

BWPi version 1.0 will run fine on Windows Vista, but unfortunately the BWPi 2006 update disk will not update the program properly on Vista.

If you have BWPi 1.0 and the BWPi 2006 disk and are upgrading your PC to Vista, you will need to exchange your two disks for the single BWPi 2.0 disk, for a clean installation on Vista. You can upgrade these two disks to the single disk BWPi 2.0 for an administration fee of £10: please call Sales on 0800 919391 .
